INTROIT: Could You Not Watch with Me One Hour by Mary Kay Beall
It was late in the evening when Jesus knelt to pray. He was troubled and anxious and He asked His friends to stay. What He needed was comfort, but instead, we hear Him say, “Could you not watch with me one hour? One hour! Only one hour! Could you not watch with me one hour? Could you not watch. One hour! Only one brief hour! Could you not watch with me one hour?” As the night gathered ‘round Him He wrestled all alone. In the silence He trembled and approached His Father’s throne. Then He turned in the darkness, and we might have heard Him groan. “Could you not watch with me one hour?” At the last it was settled; He knew what had to be. There was no turning back now from His dread destiny. See the sweat on His brow as He whispers one last plea: “Could you not watch? One hour!”

ANTHEM: They Could Not by Ron Harris and Claire Coninger/arr. by Tim Paul
They looked at Him and saw a simple man, a carpenter with healing in His hands. They saw Him calm a sea and heal a dying man. They saw, but could they really understand? They listened to the teaching that they heard. They wondered at the mystery of His Word. They wondered what He meant about a Father’s plan. They heard, but could they really understand? They could not. Though they tried, they could not. He was just a simple carpenter with healing in His hands. Could they really understand? They could not. So finally, upon a rugged cross, they killed the Man who would not suffer loss. And when at last they took what willingly He gave, He died, but could they keep Him in the grave? They could not. Praise God, they could not. Praise God! They could not!
