PRELUDE:  Chorale Prelude: Have Mercy, Lord, My Sin Forgive by J. S. Bach

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

CALL TO WORSHIP

HYMN:  A Mighty Fortress Is Our God [Ein’Feste Burg]

PRAYER OF PRAISE

INTROIT:  Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days by Erik Meyer

Lord, who throughout these forty days for us didst fast and pray, teach us with thee to mourn our sins, and close by Thee to stay.  As Thou with Satan didst contend and didst the victory win, O give us strength in Thee to fight, in Thee to conquer sin.  As Thou didst hunger, bear and thirst, so teach us, gracious Lord, to die to self, and chiefly live by Thy most holy word.  And through these days of penitence, and through Thy Passiontide, yea, evermore, in life and death, Jesus, with us abide.  Abide with us, that so, this life of suffering overpast, an Easter of unending joy we may attain at last! [Claudia Frances Hernaman]

 PRAYER OF CONFESSION

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

SONG OF GRATEFUL PRAISE:  Praise God, All You Nations [Da N’ase]

SCRIPTURE LESSON:  Matthew 4:1-11

ANTHEM:  Forty Days and Forty Nights by Harrison Oxley

Forty days and forty nights Thou wast fasting in the wild, forty days and forty nights tempted and yet undefiled. Sunbeams scorching all the day, chilly dewdrops nightly shed, prowling beasts about Thy way, stones Thy pillow, earth Thy bed. Let us Thine endurance share, and from earthly joys abstain, with Thee watching unto prayer, strong with Thee to suffer pain. And if Satan, vexing sore, flesh or spirit should assail, Thou, His vanquisher before, grant we may not faint nor fail.  So shall we have peace divine, holier gladness ours shall be, round us too shall angels shine, such as ministered to Thee.  Keep, O keep us, Savior dear, ever constant by Thy side, that with Thee we may appear at the eternal Eastertide.  Amen. [G. H. Smyttan and Francis Pott]
