CALL TO WORSHIP

INTROIT:  A Vineyard Grows by K. Lee Scott

Amid the world’s bleak wilderness a vineyard grows with promise green, the planting of the Lord himself, the planting of the Lord. His love selected this terrain, His vine with love he planted here to bear the choicest fruit for him.  We are his branches, chosen, dear, and though we feel the dresser’s knife, we are the objects of his care.  From him we draw the juice of life, for him supply his winery with fruit from which true joys derive.  Vine, keep what I was meant to be: Your branch, with your rich life in me.  [Jaroslav J. Vajda]

PRAYER

HYMN: Of the Father’s Love Begotten, stanzas 1,2,5 & 6 [Divinum Mysterium]

PRAYER

SCRIPTURE LESSON: John 15:1-11

ANTHEM:  Christ, the Vine by Robert J. Powell

Christ, the vine, and God, the gardener, we, the branches bearing fruit. We can bring forth shoots of promise when our lives in Christ take root.  Christ, the fruit from Jesse springing, you fulfilled the prophet’s trust.  And you pray that we, your body, will fulfill your trust in us.  Christ we submit to pruning that we bear more grapes for wine.  Help us, when we’re overburdened, draw new strength from you, the vine.  You made us to be partners growing Spirit’s fruit anew.  Keep us one in love together: you in us, and we in you!  [Edith Downing]

SERMON: “Where It Begins and Where It Brings Us”

HYMN: Fight the Good Fight [Duke Street]

PRAYER

BENEDICTION

RESPONSE:  The Prayer by Carole Bayer Sager and David Foster/arr. Tom Fettke

We pray You’ll be our eyes, and watch us where we go, and teach us to be wise in times when we don’t know.  Let this be our prayer when we lose our way. Lead us to a place, guide us with Your grace to a place where we’ll be safe.  We pray we’ll find Your light, and hold it in our hearts as darkness falls each night, remind us where You are.  Let this be our prayer, when shadows fill our day.  Lead us, Lord, lead us in Your righteousness; make Your way plain for us to see.  Let this be our prayer, just like every child needs to find a place, guide us with Your grace.  Give us faith so we’ll be safe.  Lead us, Lord.
